Here's a traditional game you could try -- apple bobbing.

Take a large bowl of water and place a number of apples in it. Players have to try to catch one of the apples using only their teeth. Hands must remain behind the back at all times.
A variation is to hang the apples from strings so that they swing about.
The person who catches an apple in the quickest time is the winner.

Origins...
There are several possible origins of this game. One possibility is that the game incorporates several old superstitions.
At Halloween a girl was supposed to be able to glimpse the face of her future husband reflected in a bowl of water as the clock strikes midnight.
If she had many suitors and wanted to know which one she should marry, she would take a number of apple pips, name them after her admirers and stick them to her face.
The last pip to fall off would reveal which suitor was the most suitable husband-to-be!
The winner of the apple bobbing game is sometimes invited to peel the apple in a single strip as long as they can make it. The length of the strip represents the size of their future fortune.

Going nuts
Another traditional Halloween pastime is the nut crack game. Throw a hazelnut into a fire and as you do so, whisper the name of the one you love. If the nut burns quietly then your lover is true to you, but if it crackles or bursts open then all is not well!

Things to make for Halloween

Trick or treating isn't the only way to celebrate Halloween.

* Why not organise a party at your home or local hall and transform it with Halloween decorations and balloons. Use specially designed Halloween paper plates and cups to serve food to your guests and serve drinks, including recipes for non-alcoholic drinks listed on this site. Encourage your guests to dress up to suit the mood. This doesn't necessarily have to be as a witch or wizard.

Nowadays, people dress in any costume that appeals to them. After all, it is all about having fun!

* Or you could contact your local cinema and see if they would put on a special show of Halloween-related films.

* Why not organise a pumpkin-carving competition at your local school? It would be a great opportunity to get press coverage in your local newspaper. Perhaps create a beacon of lighted pumpkins down your street?

* As Halloween and Bonfire Night are two great night-time celebrations that are also close together, why not combine them in a week-long party? But take great care with those costumes, if you do.

If you have any other ideas for celebrating Halloween, please email us with them and we will promote them on this site and provide you with a credit.
